SMRITI DIXIT

Born 1971

B.F.A. in M. S. University, Baroda (1993-94)
Diploma in Bangiya Sangeet Parishad (1986-87)
Junior and Senior Diploma in Classical Vocal (1984-85)

Smriti Dixit is a uniquely talented artist who creates abstract mixed media artworks which include the traditional art of sewing. She acknowledges the long standing craft of sewing, undertaken by many Indian women, and simultaneously modernizes and individualizes it by incorporating uniquely created textures and patterns into her contemporary abstract color works. What is unusual and noteworthy of Dixit's artworks is that unlike many artists' geometric abstract color works, hers retain a very strong organic component. This is due to the fact that even when she repeats a pattern or texture, each individual piece is slightly different. The human element in her work is visible in the way in which each material is handled. For example, she often tears the fabric included in her artworks only to stitch it back together, sometimes recreating the form, other times reinventing it. This embodies her work with a strong concept of rebirth, recycling and renewal. It is also interesting to note that unlike many contemporary artworks which have sleek clean glossy finishes, Dixit embraces the human process of production and creation. Her process of stitching, tangling and draping fabric is the central element of these beautiful textured mixed media pieces.

POOJA IRANNA

Born 1969, in New Delhi

Master of Fine Arts in Painting, College of Art, New Delhi (1995)
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting, College of Art, New Delhi (1991)
Pooja Iranna's world of artistry is one in which structures and textures take center stage. Through her work in mixed media, she examines connecting, intersecting, and dangling lines that form various works with a gridlike, architectural style. The results are unpredictable and richly varied: "Falling Sky" (1998) uses interconnected pieces of wood and toothpicks with cloth to depict a scene of order fighting against dissolution into chaos. Another, untitled piece from 1998 uses wood strips, toothpicks, and connecting string to create what looks like a suspension bridge – simultaneously sturdy and (perhaps deceptively) frail.
Pooja Iranna's art is reflective of her painstaking creative progression. She relies on a two-part process that involves "building up" her pieces in wet and dry stages. She takes various materials; cuts them; pokes holes in them; crushes, slices, and shreds them. She then strengthens and solidifies the materials by gluing, adding layers, and tying knots.

HARSHA VARDHANA

Born 1958, India

Post Graduate in Bio-Sciences, Birla Institute of Science & Technology, Pilani
Diploma in Business Management

S. Harsha Vardhana is a self taught artist who abandoned his highly successful career as a Bio-Scientist in 1993, to pursue his latent passion for painting and artistic practice. His father, the late master abstractionist Jagdish Swaminathan, established the artists 'Group 1890' in 1963 and came to inspire an entire future generation of artists. It seems it was only a matter of time before Vardhana would develop a gravitational pull toward the artistic environment to which he was born.

Vardhana works primarily on paper and canvas, creating textured geometrical forms pared down with rudimentary colours. His abstract symbols of inverted triangular structures are constructed with responsive fields of colour which lacerate into each other. A formal balance is articulated with an almost delicate, personally impulsive effect. Vardhana has once described the process as immersing himself in the sensory experience of painting, which begins with the 'ritual cleansing of the mind'.

K. S. Radhakrishnan (b. 1956)

Born in 1956 in the state of Kerala, Radhakrishnan trained in sculpture at the Viswa Bharati University in Santiniketan. He continued at the Viswa Bharati to do further graduate course in sculpture, graduating in 1981. As a leading sculptor out of India, Radhakrishnan's work has been shown in several solo shows in India and has traveled to France, Denmark, and the United Kingdom. In 1993, he had a solo exhibition at the Centre des Bonds de Marne, Le Perreaux-Bry sur-Marne, in Paris.

K S Radhakrishnan is one of the most notable among the new generation of sculptors who has successfully brought about a definitive resurgence in Indian sculpture. Like many of his contemporaries, he is a figurative sculptor, but his preference for modeling and bronze casting over new materials sets him apart from the rest of them. Recharging age-old sculptural processes with a new sensibility thus is the singular challenge he brings to modern Indian sculpture. And this makes him a modernist – who approached his work with discernable ambition and considerable and considerable aplomb while steering clear of brinkmanship. With celebration of sensuality as one of its running themes, his work is at once both intimate and universal in its appeal. A personal commemorative sculpture, with a scale and presence that holds well in natural settings, his work has found permanent home in a number of public collections all over the world. – R Siva Kumar, Professor of art history, Viswa Bharati University, Santiniketan.

The overwhelming majority of his sculptures have evolved from precisely two figures that came to occupy his imagination when he was a student at Santiniketan in the late 1970s and early 1980s. A man who walked into the artist's life, who called himself Musui and became a compelling presence; and a woman, whom the artist created as Musui's counterpoint and companion, and called Maiya. Between them, these key protagonists have dominated Radhakrishnan's image-making practice, recurring and manifesting themselves in a plurality of guises, playing now one role and now another. – Ranjit Hoskote, art critic from Mumbai.

AKHILESH

Born 1956, Indore

National Diploma in Fine Arts, Indore (1977-78)

Akhilesh's paintings appear to be a collection of beginnings. But there are no ends. His work gives a feeling of being left unfinished and yet it does not seem incomplete. It is not possible to look at it in terms of a beginning leading to an end. The way he uses lines may lend a certain linearity to his work but these lines seem to melt into the canvas, refusing to lend typical linear characteristics to his work. His paintings appear to be full of freshness and the colours resonate with emotions. He does not delve into virginal territory. Rather he sticks to familiar ground. It is his method of translating familiar territory on to canvas that imparts an individual characteristic to his work. His paintings do not scream for attention and have little to offer to the casual, hurried viewer. But for the patient observer, they are an enriching experience.

The artist lives and works in Bhopal.
