Pankaj Panwar's sculptures in bronze, wood and fiberglass depict fantastic figures wrestling with the grand themes of existence.
(PALO ALTO, CA) January 6, 2009 – Aicon Gallery presents a solo exhibition of sculptures by Lucknow-born sculptor Pankaj Panwar. This will be the artist's first exhibition with Aicon Gallery, and his first exhibition in the United States.
Working in multiple media, Pankaj Panwar creates large and small-scale sculptures in which enigmatic personas engage in mysterious psychological pursuits. His style combines modern and traditional iconographies into a contemporary aesthetic with deep roots.
Based in Santiniketan, Bengal, Pankaj Panwar has had several recent solo exhibitions at venues including the Royal College of Art, London; Grosvenor Museum, Chester; and Leeds City Art Gallery in the United Kingdom; and Art-Heritage, New Delhi, India. His work has been included in group exhibitions at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi; National Gallery of Modern Art, Kolkata/Mumbai/New Delhi; Gallery Threshhold, New Delhi; Charles Wallace Trust, New Delhi; Akar Prakar, Kolkata; Birla Academy, Kolkata/Mumbai; CIMA, Kolkata/Mumbai; and Gallery Espace, New Delhi, among others.
Panwar is a recipient of the National Award for Sculpture from Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi; the All India Exhibition Sculpture Award from Lalit Kala Akademi, Lucknow; and a Nomura Sculpture Award from Nomura International, London. Panwar holds an MFA in Sculpture from M.S. University, Baroda, a BFA in Sculpture from Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, and a Post-Experience Diploma in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art, London.
