Neeraj Goswami
GOLDEN ORB: QUEST FOR EL DORADO
Aicon Gallery, NY
May 17 – June 2, 2007
Opening reception and artist talk, May 17, 6-9pm

Neeraj Goswami has forged an expression of his own and achieved a discerning following. Not surprisingly, Goswami is one of Delhi's most gifted young artists, poised to become a canonic figure. It is thus Aicon's privilege to host his first solo exhibition in New York. Goswami's oeuvre is preoccupied with a wide-ranging scope of human states. At once, vibrant and pulsating with life, the figures exude a stoic and meditative calm. His ability to poetically marry these extremes is echoed in his handling of the medium. Though the surfaces are highly textured, his tones of Celadon Porcelain and Onyx Styrations, for example, render a gentle and rare luminosity.

It is this very glow that has become Goswami's signature but it is more than a calming presence. He has invested his personal interests in his art. A deeply spiritual person, Goswami follows the teaching of his guru and is well-versed in religious texts. Golden Orb: Quest for El Dorado, captures his pursuit of the mystical unknown and invites the viewer to contemplate a more golden place. Despite his figurative depictions, his subjects tread unearthly realms. Whether they are prostrating in prayer, rising in apotheosis, or ready to simply step right out of the canvas, Goswami transports the viewer between worlds.

Goswami completed both his Bachelor's and Master's from Delhi College of Art. He has participated in several group shows worldwide. In 1998, he was awarded the silver medal at the Indian Biennial. He was also awarded the Lalit Kala grant fellowship that same year. His works grace a number of collections around the country including the prestigious NGMA.
