Gallery ArtsIndia is proud to present an exhibition of Akbar Padamsee's work.
A notable member of the Bombay Progressives- founded in the 1940s by other Indian greats S.H. Raza, F.N.Souza and M.F. Husain- Akbar Padamsee (b. 1928) is considered among those who set the precedent for modernism on the subcontinent. The Progressives articulated a staunch commitment to the pursuit of their own personal styles, limiting themselves neither to their colonial antecedents' adherence to academic Western styles, nor to the revivalist trend that was popular during the era of independence. Together, they heralded a new energy in the Indian art.
Padamsee is renowned for his metascapes and semi-figural nudes on canvas, which of late have procured illustrious sales on international auctions. Recently visible on the auctions as well is the notable 1997 Gandhi series, one of the select few in which he has handled portraiture. Often the interest in Padamsee's work lies in its pendulation between the figurative and non-figurative.
