Shipra Bhattacharya, July 2006:
Exhibition at ArtsIndia West: July 14th – August 6th
Opening Reception: Friday, July 14th 2006, 6-9 pm
ArtsIndia West is thrilled to present its upcoming exhibition of recent works by Shipra Bhattacharya. The opening reception of this exhibition is at ArtsIndia West, Palo Alto on July 14th from 6:00 through 9:00pm.
Born in 1954 in Kolkata, West Bengal, Shipra Bhattacharya graduated from Calcutta University in 1975. She studied fine arts at the Government College of Art & Craft and the College of Visual Arts Calcutta, under the guidance of Shuvaprasanna. She began exhibiting her works from her home state capital, Kolkata and held her first solo show in 1981. She has made her presence felt on the city's thriving art scene and has since held twelve solo exhibitions both in India and abroad.
ArtsIndia West's 2006 exhibition of Shipra Bhattacharya's work is entitled Feminine Fantasies. Along with portraying her native Kolkata these recent works depict wonderfully beautiful fantasies of the female form. Women, both urban and rural, have been the artist's subjects of choice and through the smooth brushwork, glowing colors and dreamy quality of her paintings she has managed to chalk out a distinct identity of her own. "Shipra Bhattacharya's creative outpouring in this large and impressive body of work revolves around her central focus on feminine figure and fantasy" – Sushma Bahl
Shipra Bhattacharya has participated in numerous group shows and in several art workshops, including the 2005 Dubai art camp. Four portfolios of drawings and graphics have been made from Shipra's works and her paintings can be found in various public, corporate and private collections, both in India and abroad.
