In August 2002, ArtsIndia acquired the famed Herwitz collection from the family of the late Chester and Davida Herwitz. ArtsIndia's acquisition of one of the best collections of contemporary Indian art anywhere in the world, gives buyers and connoisseurs of contemporary Indian art the kind of access that hitherto has been available only to museums and institutions. The Herwitz love for Indian Art began over 40 years ago when they both began visiting India on business in 1961. As the largest and most comprehensive collection of Indian art, the Herwitz Collection traces the development of many of India's established artists. They began collecting M. F. Husain's works in 1966, and at Husain's urging, a vast number of other Indian contemporary works - approximately 6,000 paintings, drawings, watercolors and prints. ArtsIndia is proud to now be able to offer a small portion of these wonderful works online, continuing what the Herwitz's originally set out to do - raise awareness and appreciation of these fine and talented artists. Keep checking as we bring much more of this collection online. Visit the Herwitz Collection
